Have you ever read an article on baseball and said: "How could they say that?" or "That's wrong."? Well, you could just do it your own way.
Get some friends. Friends will definetely help you make your dream a reality.
Create a title for your magazine. This step is obviously important. Try to pick a title that will grab attention like Grand Slam and not Bob's Baseball Magazine.
Decide on what aspect of baseball you will focus on. Do you want to print just the facts, or write a magazine of opinion pieces? Do you want to focus on your local minor league team or the MLB?
Write articles. This will go faster if your friends help with the article writing also.
Use some sort of free publishing software (like Scribus) to get the basic layout of your newspaper. A word processor like OpenOffice.org Writer would work also.
Print about 30 copies of the magazine. Distribute these to your friends who helped you in the first place, and then distribute them to people around the community.
Make more copies if your magazine does well. Distribute them to a broader area (your neighborhood instead of your street).
Continue branching out and making new issues and you may soon be the next Sports Illustrated!
Tips
- Add pictures! Pictures liven up any magazine!
- Give your magazines away for free at the beginning. People will be eager to check it out and may be willing to buy later on if they like it.
- Offer subscriptions, even at the beginning. This could make you a few dollars, and a few fans.
- Spend some of your money advertising in the local paper. It will pay off when you have 20-30 new subscribers within a week!
Warnings
- Share equally and be a source of guidance rather than a bossy power figure when running the magazine. Your friends should receive equal say in everything and should receive an equal portion of the profits.
- Be philosophical if your magazine doesn't sell. Just go on with your life; it's all a learning process.
